An African safari always promises to be an exciting adventure. Going on safari the luxury train Africa way is not only a thrilling experience it is an expedition undertaken in the lap of luxury. This 5-star hotel on wheels transports passengers from one point of the continent to another stopping over along the way to view historical sites and natural wonders. It is an experience of a lifetime that surely features on many a person's bucket list.Trips around Southern Africa are undertaken regularly and every couple of years they offer their now famous Cape to Cairo and back excursion. In 2014 the train will once again set out on this journey. It starts in Cape Town and travels via Victoria Falls to Zanzibar. From there passengers are flown in private luxury to Serengeti and Entebbe and on to Khartoum. Here they exchange their mode of travel for a 5-star cruising experience up the Nile to Cairo.
Trains offer three compartment grades, two dining cars, lounge car, smoking lounge and an observation coach at the rear. Additional coaches accommodate staff and facilities required to look after guests. The entire train has been refurnished in a bygone era style with every modern convenience a discerning passenger may require. It replicates an era of gracious living in quiet elegant surroundings. For this reason there are no radios or televisions on board. Passengers are also requested to only use their laptops and cell phones in their compartments.
The dining car decor is Victorian and tables are set with crisp linens, silver, fine china and crystal glass. The on board chefs excel at preparing local and international dishes filled with taste bud tingling flavors. Wines from well known South African estates are served at mealtimes. Smart casual is the dress code during the day and in the evening everyone dresses up to fit in with the elegant surroundings.
The windows of the observation coaches are enlarged for maximum viewing and specially built sight-seeing balconies have been added. The chairs dotted around these coaches are comfortable, the atmosphere cozy and relaxed.
With three types of accommodation to choose from there is something for every taste and budget. The compartments are well planned and all available space has been cleverly utilized. Royal Suites have a Victorian bath in addition to a shower stall. De Luxe and Pullman suites are also en suite with shower units.
Both De Luxe and Royal categories offer separate lounge and bedroom areas. The Pullman design houses a convertible double bed sleeper couch. No attention to detail has been spared to ensure passengers are comfortable in top quality surroundings. Compartments are equipped with stocked bar fridges, desk like surfaces for writing or laptops, private safes and room service 24/7.
Owning their own station and maintenance yard has enabled Rovos Rail to ensure their luxury train Africa trips are unique. Private company functions and weddings can be hosted in the station house building. People wishing to privately charter these trains have the option of either hiring a 44 or 72 passenger train.
